PC-FasType - Quick HELP Facility -- Advanced Menu
Using selections made from this menu assumes you know how to type
more than just the basic alphabet. The exercises selected will include
CAPITAL letters, numbers, and special characters & symbols; - this is some
really hard stuff.
The EASY Sentences selection will contain mostly CAPITAL and lower-
case letters. You don't have to worry too much about numbers until you
get to HARD Sentences and Short Paragraphs.
The exercise format is identical to the exercises selected from the
Intermediate Exercises Menu; that is, you must type the character pointed
to by the house-shaped cursor. Keyboard helpers are still available to
you for assistance. Note the double spacing between sentences too.
@PAGE@
When you select any of the exercises in either the Intermediate or
Advanced Exercises Menus, the length of the text you have to type will
vary considerably. Text longer than what the text window will hold will
scroll upward as you type succeeding lines. Some text exercises are only
one sentence long. The count in characters of these exercises range
anywhere from 60 to 350 characters depending on what PC-FasType randomly
chooses from its own text files.
You should be able to successfully type all of the characters
displayed in the text window. Keystroke errors will be flashed on the
displayed keycap (with a large NO symbol) and the cursor will advance to
the next character leaving an asterisk where the keystroke error was made.
You can backspace over the error and fix it if you want.

TIMED EXERCISES
Two selections from this menu have a Timed Exercises option. OPEN
TYPING and LONG PARAGRAPHS will let you choose the TIMED exercise option.
You can select a time duration of one minute up to 20 minutes. The timer
is displayed in the upper right corner and begins to count down to zero
with your first keystroke. When the timer reaches zero, the exercise ends
and your typing statistics will be displayed.
You can END a timed exercise anytime by simply pressing the ESCAPE
key, or one of the other keys shown on the bottom of the screen. The
Escape key exit will compile and display your statistics, but pressing one
of the other keys will cancel the current exercise; no statistics will be
compiled. If you type until the timer runs out, the current exercise will
end as if you had pressed the Escape key, and your statistics will be
compiled and displayed on the screen.

LONG PARAGRAPHS:
If you choose the LONG PARAGRAPHS option, you'll have to type the
displayed text without the benefit of a displayed keyboard to help you
along. This is really for advanced typists who what to increase their
speed; it eliminates the keyboard display as a distraction and gives the
typist a chance to "look ahead" at the text they will type.
OPEN TYPING:
This option is for advanced typists who what to brush up on their
word-processing skills.
You can type anything you want into an empty window and you have
limited use of the cursor and home/end keys to navigate about the window.
This simulates using a real word-processor or text editor.
You should have some text handy that you want to type from. You can
type as long as you want; pressing the escape key will end the exercise
and give you typing statistics. The Timed option is available too.
@PAGE@
Since PC-FasType can't check your spelling, we won't know when you've
made a typing error. We assume you're striving for accuracy as well as
speed so we'll count your use of the BACKSPACE key as a typing error.
SPECIAL KEYS:
At the bottom of the screen for LONG Paragraphs and OPEN Typing
appears a list of function and window navigation keys. Most are self-
explanatory, but we'll summarize them here:
ESC = End Typing; view statistics window
F7 = Regular or Timed Exercise; toggles between both
BKSP = Correct a typing error
F9 = Start Over Again or Clear Window
F1-F5= Cancel and Show Menu
F8 = Type your own text; for LONG Paragraphs-YOUR text file
F10 = Clear and start over again; resets timer
Arrow keys = for Open Typing; move cursor around the screen

The ADVANCED DRILLS menu selections are described as follows:
** Begin Typing ---------------- F10 **
Displays the Screen Keyboard for you to begin typing your selected
drill or exercise.
** HELP Facility ---------------- F1 **
Call up the Quick HELP Facility of PC-FasType.
** EASY Sentences --------------- F2 **
These exercises consist of complex words and phrases. Capital and
upper case letters are used. There may be a few numbers and
punctuation characters for you to type.
** HARD Sentences --------------- F3 **
These exercises contain a heavy mixture of CAPITAL and lower-case
letters, numbers and symbols. Use options from the Keyboard Helpers
Menu if you need guidance while typing.
@PAGE@
** SHORT Paragraphs ------------- F4 **
These exercises consist of small paragraphs made up of several
sentences or one long sentence. Included are capital letters,
numbers, symbols and punctuation. If you're already a speedy typist,
these exercises will tend to slow you down.
** LONG Paragraphs -------------- F5 **
You'll be able to exercise ALL of your typing skills with this
selection. A full screen window will display lengthy text randomly
chosen from this exercise file. In most cases there will be more
than one paragraph for you to type; some of them will be hard and
some of them will be easy. LONG paragraphs will give you a better
feel for your true typing speed and accuracy.
** Type Your Own Text ----------- F6 **
Making this selection will pop-up a dialog box asking you for a file
name containing your own text you can use to practice typing.
PC-FasType will read the file and display the lines in the text
window for you to type. See the section in the User Guide entitled
Constructing Your Own Text Files.
@PAGE@
** Open Typing ----------------- F7 **
A full-screen empty window and NO keyboard display will let you type
anything you want. Typing errors are counted if you use the
backspace key. This feature will let you practice your word-
processing skills. You can use the cursor keys to move around the
screen. PC-FasType will BEEP you when you're getting near the end
of a line (just like a real typewriter).
** Return to Previous Menu ------ <- **
This selection re-displays the previous menu which is the
INTERMEDIATE DRILLS Menu. Use the arrow key for convenience.
** Display Next Menu ------------ -> **
